Stories of my Grandpa

My grandpa's name is Zhang, WenZhong

1937/4/25---2024/2/1

My grandpa  Zhang WenZhong was born in an artistic family, with ancestors who served as officials painting for the imperial court of the Qing Dynasty. My grandpa learned painting alongside his grandfather, the artist Zhang Jianyang from a young age. He had a strong interest in painting since then and often practiced by coping and sketching.

After coming of age, my grandpa pursued a career in teaching at a university specializing in technology. Printing, as his personal interest as well as lifelong passion,  he continued to create art in his spare life.

His works were exhibited multiple times in Jinzhou City and at Liaoning University of Technology. After retiring, he continued to refine his craft by studying at a senior university, constantly seeking to grow as an artist.

Over the years, he filled more than 20 sketchbooks and compiled a book of his artwork. He had a special gift for capturing the spirit of sparrows in his paintings, using a style all his own. Every painting here offers a glimpse into what caught my grandpa’s eye and moved his heart. This site is a collection of those moments—his personal way of remembering and honoring the beauty around him.

My grandpa always wished for more people to see his art. That wish is the reason I created this site: to share his vision, his brushstrokes, and the quiet stories behind them with the world.

Aside from all his accomplishments, to me, he is a loving grandfather who led by example and taught me valuable life lessons. I miss the days I spent with him—listening to his conversations with my grandma, tasting the fish he cooked, and cherishing every little moment we shared. This website is my way of honoring his memory and keeping his spirit alive.

With love,
Bowen — his granddaughter.
